Chaos breaks out in Joburg’s IEC results centre

Scores of presiding officers have staged a protest at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)’s provincial centre in Auckland Park, Johannesburg.

They are unhappy that they spent a long time trying to submit the ballot papers from their voting stations but they’ve been kept waiting for hours on end.

Some of them are teachers and are worried about not making it to work.

They say they are frustrated.

“I was supposed to be getting some results and I was supposed to be printing out the documents to indicate the details. We reported the problem yesterday [Wednesday] – it’s more than 24 hours. This comes as a surprise to us. Nobody told us about this that’s why people are so cross,” say some the protesters.

The IEC is yet to respond to what is causing delays in capturing the results for the 2016 local government elections.
