Ethekwini’s results delayed due to disputes and complaints

The results for the Ethekwini municipality is yet to be released, almost a day after polls closed. With over 60% of the national vote counted, concerns have been raised about the delay in releasing the results of the largest metro in Kwazulu-Natal, writes Sithembile Mbete, Political Sciences Lecturer at the University of Pretoria.
There is speculation that the delay is a result of political disputes or complaints at specific voting districts.
IEC sources attributed the slow release of results to an administrative backlog in the IEC’s verification and auditing system.
A senior official said that there had been queries at several voting districts and a decision was taken to resolve each query before loading all the results onto the IEC system.
This meant there was a backlog that needed to be cleared before the Ethekwini results could be processed. The IEC insists that there are no major political disputes that have delayed the results.
