ANC support declines in Thabazimbi

By Sylvia Mbiti

With all votes counted, the African National Congress (ANC) has won ten seats in Thabazimbi Local Municipality in Limpopo. Even though the party has retained the municipality, its support has declined.

In 2011 the ANC support was 62.71%, now it has dropped to 45.3%. This is a significant dip in support; in 2011 the party had 70% of the PR votes cast, and by 2014 it had fallen to 56%.

Their biggest threat now is the opposition parties, the Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) – with both parties having gained five seats each. The DA’s support has slightly increased from 19.86% to 22.21%, the EFF’s support stands at 20.24%.

Thabazimbi Local Municipality was placed under administration in 2015; in the same year Eskom wanted to suspended bulk supplies of electricity in the municipality.
