Coalition on the cards for Kannaland

By Naledi Mailula

A look at the results of the Kannaland Local Municipality in the Western Cape shows that a coalition is needed in order to determine who would run the municipality.

The Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa (Icosa) managed to secure the majority of the votes (48%), gaining them three seats in the council.

The African National Congress (ANC) and Democratic Alliance (DA) however have each secured two seats after respectively garnering 21% and 27% of these votes.

What this means is that Icosa can enter into a coalition with either of the parties and this would translate into five seats for them.

However, the ANC and DA could decide to form a coalition between themselves and this would land them in the lead with four council seats. As the leading party, however, Icosa is in a healthier position to align themselves with one of the other two.
