Municipal takeovers won’t interrupt service delivery: Makhura

Gauteng Premier David Makhura says the provincial government will ensure that the takeover of the new municipalities in the province won’t interrupt service delivery or anything else that directly affects residents.

Makhura was speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg.

He says it’s his job as premier to make sure there’s no instability when transitions occur.

Currently, four of the eleven municipalities in Gauteng have hung councils following last week’s Local Government Elections.

Makhura says his office will work closely with whoever takes over governance of Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Mogale City.

“I would like urge all the parties to put the interest of the people first as they engage in coalition negotiations so that we can have, as soon as possible, stable governments in these municipalities. I also urge the parties to give priority to the need to deliver basic services in order to meet the needs of our communities which include both services delivery and economic development,” says Makhura.
