DA’s Da Gama elected Speaker of JHB metro

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Vasco Da Gama has been elected as Speaker of the Joburg Metro. Da Gama got 146 of the votes versus the ANC’s candidate got 126 votes.

Earlier proceedings at the City of Johannesburg metro council’s inaugural meeting had been halted. Counting in the race for a new speaker of the Johannesburg metro was halted after the  Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) discovered discrepancies.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) andAfrican National Congresses’ (ANC) clashed at the Joburg Metro Council’s meeting over ballots. The EFF wants its members to have an option of disclosing their cast ballot.

The IEC has indicated that the ballot will be kept secret.

The Johannesburg metro council earlier voted for the position after all 270 councillors had been sworn in.

The Democratic Alliance has secured a coalition with smaller parties and is expected to succeed in getting Herman Mashaba elected as mayor after reaching a working agreement with the EFF.

The African Independent Congresses’ (AIC) Margaret Arnold says her party will continue to support the ANC.

“We are true to the constituents that we are serving and we are saying that even if we go with the ANC, we go with them whether they are governing or whether they are on the opposition,” explains Arnold.

“We had consulted with our constituencies and as a party that’s on the left wing we cannot move to the right. The AIC is saying we do not serve constituencies similar to the DA, thus we will go with the ANC. We are not shying away from it because (as) the AIC [we are] also saying that we are not running to be government. To us it is all about the people, the people have given us a mandate and said go with the ANC and that is what we are doing today,” says Arnold.

Meanwhile, the ANC Johannesburg mayoral candidate, Parks Tau, says he is ready to serve the city if re-elected.
