Candidate selection process cost ANC in local polls: Ramokgopa

Outgoing mayor and African National Congress (ANC) chairperson of Tshwane, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has conceded that the party’s candidate selection process may have cost them at local polls.
Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate, Solly Msimanga, is expected to be elected Tshwane metro mayor on Friday when the city holds its inaugural council meeting.
The DA has reached an agreement with the Economic Freedom Fighters and formed a coalition with smaller parties, which will see them voting for Msimanga.
Ramokgopa says the candidate list selection negatively impacted their performance at the polls.
“Candidate selection process, I mean it is part of those reflections. We would be in denial if we would say to you, all of you that it did not impact negatively on our campaign. So, there are areas where we can see that there’s demonstratable evidence that although we won the wards but we did not win it with the margins as expected. The voter turnout was low although we won and it is the aggregate of these things that contribute to this negative picture.”
