IFP to receive support from DA, EFF to govern KZN districts

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) is set to receive the support of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to govern at least five local municipalities and three district Councils in KwaZulu-Natal.

The party has secured the cooperation of the two opposition parties in order to keep the African National Congress (ANC) out.

The IFP unveiled the outcomes of its coalition talks in Parliament on Wednesday.

The IFP won six municipalities with an outright majority in KZN, including Nkandla.

The cooperation agreement with the DA and the EFF is set to add a further eight Councils under its wing. This agreement will not give rise to the IFP giving executive seats away in return for cooperation

“The IFP, DA and EFF agree on the principle that every citizen must be served by local government, regardless of which political party they support. How we cooperate in each municipality, will this not be driven by politicking, but by how it can attain these goals of good governance, service delivery and clean administration,” says IFP Chairperson, Narend Singh.

The local councils that are affected include Edumbe, Endumeni, Nquthu, Mtubatuba and Abaqulusi, and the District Councils include Zululand, Umkhanyakude and Umzinyathi.

The IFP is also hoping it can attract the support of an independent candidates in order to govern the Jozini Municipality.
