Political analyst Lindiwe Makhunga says National Freedom Party (NFP) leader Zanele Magwaza-Msibi has nothing to lose if her party does not participate in the municipal elections.
The party has approached the Electoral Court after the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) disqualified it from participating in the August the third polls because the NFP’s failed to pay the required deposit on time.
The party managed to pay after the deadline.
Judgment in the court was reserved on Friday. The outcome of the NFP’s court case could be important for the elections in parts of northern KwaZulu-Natal.
The NFP is currently in coalition with the African National Congress (ANC) governing three sub-regions of the Zululand Municipality, while the ANC holds the other two.
The ANC on Friday intensified its campaign in the region by deploying its leader President Jacob Zuma and KZN provincial chairperson, Premier Willies Mchunu to it.
