STATS SA MUNICIPAL NON-FINANCIAL CENSUS 2014/ 2015

Stats SA released its non-financial municipal census for the 2014/ 2015 local government financial year earlier this week. Some of the more stand-out features of that report included:

There has been a marked increase in the delivery of basic services, with 2.5% of municipal citizens receiving water, 4.3% accessing the electricity grid, 4.2% receiving sewerage and sanitation services; and 5.3% accessing solid waste management from their local municipality;

Additionally, of the 12,5 million households receiving water, 4,6 million had access to free basic water. Out of 10,9 million households receiving electricity, 2,7 million received electricity as a free basic service from municipalities and service providers. About 3,3 million households received free basic sewerage and sanitation services compared with a total of 10,9 million. Out of 9 million households receiving solid waste management, 2,3 million households received free basic solid waste management;

Between 2014 and 2015, there has been a slight decrease in the number of bucket toilets still being used countrywide. Please see attached table:
