Political analyst Somadoda Fikeni says it will not be easy for the Democratic Alliance (DA) to win metros such as Johannesburg and Nelson Mandela.
The party launched its election manifesto with thousands of supporters at the Rand stadium, south of Johannesburg on Saturday.
The DA says it would manage South African cities and town competently if were elected to run the country’s municipalities. The party says it has enough experience to successfully run municipalities, citing Cape Town and Midvaal as examples.
Fikeni says the fight for the metros will still be interesting.
Mmusi Maimane officially launched the party’s race for the local government elections on Saturday. This will be the first election he presides over since taking over as leader of the official opposition.
The manifesto launch comes hot on the heels of the African National Congress’s launch in Port Elizabeth last week.
