Voters warned against taking selfies

Voters are being strongly warned against taking pictures inside the voting booth or voting stations.

During the casting of special votes on Monday, numerous pictures were posted on social media of ballot papers, including those cast by a local DJ and a government official.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) electoral officer in KwaZulu-Natal, Mawethu Mosery says anyone who takes a photo or a selfie during the voting process can be criminally charged.

“It’s actually disheartening and disturbing that such important individuals have transgressed the law by disclosing the secrecy of their ballot. We will have to charge them either criminally or charge them in terms of the electoral code. Criminally they are subject to a term of imprisonment or a fine for breaching the code of conduct and in this case the two individuals we will explore the decision,” says Mosery.
