Mbeki sheds light on campaign for ANC

Former President Thabo Mbeki says he was unable to campaign for the African National Congress (ANC) because of international work commitments.

Mbeki was speaking to the media at his home in Johannesburg after meeting with the ANC’s Mayoral Candidate for the City of Joburg metro, Parks Tau.

While he insisted that his vote was a secret, he was wearing an ANC jacket.

Mbeki was due to meet all three of the ANC’s mayoral candidates for the Metros in Gauteng.

However, only Tau showed up, as Tshwane mayoral candidate Thoko Didiza and Ekurhuleni’s Mzwandile Masina were still campaigning.

Mbeki’s urged all South Africans to vote on Wednesday.

“The people of South Africa must give their own view about how they want the municipalities to be to be governed [and] who should govern them. I think it is important that we get a big turnout even for the stability of the municipalities. The legitimacy of those who get elected depends … on the participation of the population in that process,” explains Mbeki.

Mbeki’s meeting with the ANC candidates comes after he met with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), who were canvassing his vote on Monday.
