EFF hopes to cement its presence

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) will on Sunday hold its final rally for the August 3 local government elections at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

It is expecting capacity crowds in the province where it is hoping to cement its presence.

The Tshela Thupa rally will mark an end to the organization’s campaign ahead of Wednesday’s polls.

EFF leaders have been crisscrossing the country in a bid to drum up support for the party which will be contesting municipal elections for the first time.

The EFF is expecting to play kingmaker in many of the municipalities remaining tight-lipped about who it is willing to go to bed with but has made it clear it will not go into coalition with the African National Congress (ANC).

A punishing EFF election campaign has taken party leaders to cities and villages across the country in a push for support.

The elections are the EFF’s second test after it managed to secure more than a million votes in the 2014 general elections, months after it was formed.

It also became the official opposition in Limpopo and the North West.

Party leader Julius Malema has been leading from the front addressing, at times, as many as five community meetings daily.

EFF supporters are a sign that their message has appeal beyond the youth

EFF is traditionally seen as a party for the youth – but during this campaign it has reached out beyond its expected base.

Holding meetings with professionals in Gauteng, hosting dinners, and increasingly the elderly have been spotted at its rallies.

Malema says EFF supporters are a sign that their message has appeal beyond the youth.

He has managed to attract capacity crowds at public meetings, however critics have questioned if these will translate into votes.

Malema is confident that they are heading for major victories

He has been going toe-to-toe with the ANC and the DA – but unlike his rivals – the EFF has not announced its mayoral candidates ahead of elections.

Malema has defended the move.
