Zuma defends decision of appointing Des van Rooyan

The African National Congress (ANC) President Jacob Zuma has again defended his decision to appoint Des van Rooyan as Finance minister.

He was speaking in Bloemfontein where he has started his final campaign trail ahead of Wednesday’s Local Government Elections.

President Zuma fired Nhlanhla Nene and replaced him with van Rooyen, a move which sent markets tumbling.

After a few days, the President Zuma re-appointed Pravin Gordhan as Finance Minister.

President Zuma says those who opposed his appointment of van Rooyen are not in charge of the economy.

“Chinese and Indians are in charge of their economy, but what is the situation in South Africa? are we in charge of the economy? no, who is in charge of the economy? I’m not going to answer that. Let me give you an example, the President of the country Jacob Zuma appoints the Minister of Finance Des Van Rooyen, qualified, but those in charge of the economy says it is wrong, the president had appointed many ministers but now we were touching the nerve of the economy that are controlled by other people,” says President Zuma.
