New DA system aims to rectify lack of woman mayoral candidates

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape says it is in the process of putting systems in place to promote women representation as mayoral candidates.

Less than a third of the DA’s mayoral candidates in the Western Cape for next month’s Local Government Elections are women, seven women out of 24 mayoral candidates.

DA provincial leader, Patricia de Lille says, “There should be a specific programme to make sure that we increase the number of women mayors. Unfortunately we did not have that programme before we started the process of interviewing and opening up people to make applications to become mayors, but certainly if your figures are correct, there is room for improvement, but I will certainly go and verify it.”

The party’s candidate selection process prescribes that an individual must apply to become a candidate.
