The Democratic Alliance (DA) has filed a formal complaint with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) against Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau over advertisements that the party says shamelessly promote Tau and the African National Congress (ANC).
The party has accused Tau of spending over R15 million on newspaper adverts in April, May and July this year to promote himself and his administration ahead of the local government elections in August.
The DA’s mayoral candidate for the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, says Tau has violated the electoral code of conduct.
“The mayor is running a campaign on radio and other platforms claiming he is a great leader. The actual advert states that he has been nominated and includes saying “clearly the City of Joburg is in good hands.
“This is clearly an excessive and gratuitous depiction of an office bearer of the City. This clearly creates the perception that promotes the Mayor as an individual,” Mashaba added.
