‘DA will listen to our cries’ – Residents of Refiliwe township

With elections campaigning hotting up, a number of African National Congress (ANC) members and supporters at Refiliwe township in Cullinan east of Pretoria, have reportedly crossed the floor to join the Democratic Alliance (DA).

They were welcomed by DA Tshwane Mayoral candidate Solly Msimang.

The DA is dissatisfied with the lack of progress in the ANC. Now these people believed to be former members and supporters of the ruling party have jumped ship.

“The ANC doesn’t help us with anything – there’s nothing it has helped us with – we’re struggling,” says a supporter.

“We choose DA because DA will listen to our cries,” says another supporter.

Msimang says: “We’ve signed 50 people that were members and some are supporters – some of the guys that are here are supporters but the 50 that we’ve signed are members.”

The party also commented on the billboard it has erected in one of the buildings in the city centre.

It says removing one mayor for another won’t make a difference as they’re cut from the same cloth.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane says: “No one must be deceived into believing that if you remove one ANC mayor for another that things will fundamentally change – it is a continuation of more patronage, more corruption, more unemployment and a lack of basic services.”

Maimane says the billboard was erected last week to remind voters of the governing party’s corrupt tendencies.
