The Congress of the People (Cope) says the credibility of next month’s local government elections hangs in the balance following revelations by former SABC Acting CEO Jimi Matthews.
Matthews confessed in an interview over the weekend that SABC management decided not to cover the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the run-up to the 2014 general elections after being approached by senior members of the African National Congress (ANC).
Cope has addressed the media in Kemption Park east of Johannesburg.
“The public has been misled and influenced and manipulated to vote founded on false reportage, manipulated reportage that produced the result that was favourable to the ruling party and in fact in the coming period there are going to be more of men and women in the media who are bound to come forward and say what they know about this issue.”
