Resignations, suspensions rock NFP

The National Freedom Party (NFP) National Chairperson, Mayiyakhe Shelembe and party Secretary General, Nhlanhla Khubisa, have both resigned from the party.

While Shelembe’s deputy Scelo Mabika and Treasurer Xolani Ndlovu have been suspended from their positions.

Shelembe and Khubisa tendered their resignation late Saturday night following mounting pressure from party members, after the party was disqualified by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to contest the upcoming municipal elections.

The party’s special National Council met Saturday night to discuss their fate.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi says he is saddened that the NFP have been disqualified from this year’s Local Government Elections.

“I feel very saddened that they’re actually caught in something that happened to us in 2011. We had the same problem in Umzumbe where our candidates could not participate for the same reason that we were late, so we pray with them that they may succeed to get condoned by the court,” says Mangosuthu.

The party has meanwhile approached the Electoral Court after the IEC disqualified it from participating in the elections because the NFP’s failed to pay the required deposit on time.
