Maimane calls for review of election laws

The Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has called for the National Legislature to review election laws to deal with predicaments such as the one the National Freedom Party (NFP) is currently facing.

The NFP is applying to the Electoral Court to condone its failure to meet the deadline for paying a deposit, after the IEC excluded it from the August the third local elections.

The court, sitting at the High Court in Johannesburg, reserved judgment on Friday without setting a date.

Maimane told DA supporters in the uPhongolo area in northern KwaZulu-Natal that after the ruling, further discussion will be needed.
“I still maintain that it’s important that when we agree on a set of rules that we work with them that ultimately it is within that framework that parties comply and there are many compliance issues, money but one but also IDs etcetera. So I need to find out and interrogate the case that’s been brought forward by the NFP as to what’s the merit,” says Maimane.
