NFP requests IEC to reverse decision on disqualification

The NFP has approached the Electoral Court in an attempt to reverse a decision by the IEC to disqualify it from contesting the August municipal elections.

The party has been disqualified from contesting the polls after it failed to pay R400 000 deposit fee by 2 June. The party has fielded 872 candidates in eight provinces with the exception of Northern Cape. Party National Chairperson, Maliyakhe Shelembe, says a party official mixed up the due dates.

‘It is true that the NFP did not pay the deposit on time but that was due to the administrative oversights that lead to the situation where the payment was made late. But we then decided to approach the electoral court to see to it whether they can help after the IEC had advised that it is not within their authority to assist us in terms of the condonation then we approached the electoral court that was Friday last week.’
