President Jacob Zuma has condemned last week’sviolent protestsin the Tshwane Metro.
Five people were killed and more than 200 others arrested when some residents of the metro took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the nomination of Thoko Didiza as the metro’s African National Congress’ (ANC) mayoral candidate.
Last week, the ruling party conceded for the first time that some of its members were involved in the violence.
The SACP has since suspended five of its leaders in the Tshwane region for their alleged involvement in the violence.
President Zuma has called for calm as the country prepares for municipal elections.
“The violence and the destruction of property that has taken place in the country during protests are unacceptable. Every South African has the right to protest but this must be done peacefully in line with the constitution government will continue to build schools and clinics to improve the lives of our people.”
