SA FM Radio Current Affairs (AM-Live) is holding its 6th election OB debate at the Beacon Valley Community Centre in Mitchells Plain on the Cape Flats of the Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality in the Western Cape on Friday.

Beacon Valley is one of 19 areas in Mitchells Plain. It is less than two square-kilometres in size, but home to about 29 000 people. It is the 4th most populated area in Mitchells Plain with over 5600 households almost all of them are “coloured” (94%), while 60% are Afrikaans-speaking and 36% English-speaking.

Among the other more populated areas in  are Tafelsig, Lentegeur, Rocklands, Eastridge, Portland, Woodlands, Westridge, Strandfontein Village, Weltevreden Valley and Mandalay.

The apartheid government established Mitchells Plain, about 30 kilometres from the Cape Town city centre, during the 1970s. It was designed to be a “model dormitory suburb” specifically for “middle-class coloured” people that the apartheid government had forcibly removed, including from District Six, in terms of the Group Areas Act.
