Cosas behind Ramokgopa as Tshwane continues to burn

The Congress of South African Students (COSAS) in the Tshwane Region, has pledged its support for mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa.

It says it wants him to retain the mayoral position, ahead of the ANC national executive committee and Gauteng provincial meetings with branches.

On Monday, the African National Congress announced former Minister of Public Works Thoko Didiza as its Tshwane mayoral candidate.

The announcement has since been met with dissatisfaction from residents across Tshwane as violence broke out on Tuesday.

COSAS Gauteng Chairperson, Thabang Mahlomuza, says the organisation does not support violent protest.

“We are in full support of the campaign but we condemn all of the violence that started taking place, not only here in Mamelodi, but in Tshwane as a whole.  We strongly condemn the burnings because that is going to delay us. We don’t want to see another Vuwani incident happening in Tshwane because Tshwane is the capital city of South Africa therefore it must be the most beautiful place as it was in the leadership of chairperson Ramokgopa. We are saying that our support for the mayor’s coming back for second term is 100% and we are not afraid.”
