Didiza announced as ANC Tshwane mayoral candidate

Former Minister of Public Works Thoko Didiza has been named as the African National Congress (ANC) Tshwane Mayoral candidate.

ANC Deputy Secretary General, Jessie Duarte, addressed the media at party headquarters in Johannesburg a while ago.

Duarte says the party is satisfied with its choice of mayor despite how the news of their candidate choice was received in the Metro.

Earlier, the ANC had denied reports that Didiza had been named mayoral candidate.

Spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa, said some journalists have been misled by reports on social media regarding the appointment.

Political Analyst Somadoda Fikeni Fikeni termed Didiza’s appointment as controversial.

Fikeni says that her appointment could be highly problematic for the ruling party as it will have to work very hard to unite the Tshwane Metro region.

“There are many controversies around the election of the current eThekwini Municipality mayor who now is an ANC mayoral candidate. As to how this will play out when she’s selected to those who were dead against her appointment, it stands to be seen. It is a risky one but ANC will have to work very hard to unite its own region there which is the biggest region in the country,” says Fikeni.
