ANC to finalise mayoral candidates

The African National Congress (ANC) will for the first time name its mayoral candidates for a municipal election.

The party has called a Special National Executive Committee meeting in Pretoria on Saturday to finalise its mayoral list for the country’s eight metros as the August 3 local poll draws closer.

This is the first time the ANC has decided to name its mayoral candidates before elections.

This year’s polls are undoubtedly a fight for the country’s major cities.

Opposition parties have vowed to wrestle control away from the ANC in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and the Nelson Mandela Bay.

However in Gauteng, ANC Provincial Chairperson Paul Mashatile earlier said they will retain all three metros in the province.

“Some ANC members who are not satisfied with the candidate list of councillors have marched to Luthuli House to express their unhappiness.”
