Buthelezi lambasts leaders over empty promises to youth

Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi has lambasted leaders who make empty promises to young people.

He says the youth of 1976 laid a foundation for free education but that dream is yet to be realised. Buthelezi has been addressing a gathering of IFP youth in Soweto.

The IFP leader laid a wreath at the Hector Pieterson Memorial Site, saying Thursday is about remembering all those who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom. He thanked the youth of 76 for their bravery.

An estimated 600 were mowed down by apartheid police during their protest against Afrikaans.

Buthelezi reminded those gathered that it was under his leadership as Home Affairs Minister that a decision was made to declare June 16 a public holiday. He says today’s young people face a different struggle for access to quality education.

The IFP leader also condemned the burning of schools, twenty two years into democracy.
