African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Gwede Mantashe has called for calm and tolerance amongst councillors during the upcoming local government elections.
Speaking during an ANC door to door campaign in Boipatong, Mantashe said working together and being united was what the ANC is all about.
Boipatong, a township just outside Vanderbijlpark is a symbolic area where 45 township residents were massacred by armed men from what was then called Kwamadala Hostel in 1992.
Mantashe called on community members to get to know and support their local councillors.
However, the core of his visit was to ask residents to vote for the ANC.
The residents put forward their needs.
“We want the ANC to develop our township, we also need tarred roads. A lot of us have lost our jobs, we are tired of empty promises.”
In his response Mantashe acknowledged that there were indeed problems in the area.
