Maimane urges voters to keep a close eye on IEC

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, Mmusi Maimane, has called on South Africans to keep an eye on the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). He was speaking during a march for free and fair elections through Potchefstroom.

Maimane says events in the Tlokwe Municipality have taught South Africans that it is important to protect democracy.

The municipality was the scene of an electoral dispute that started during by-elections and ended up in the Constitutional Court.

Maimane has asked South Africans need to take responsibility for protecting democracy and take ownership of August 3 municipal elections.

He says the final line of defence of democracy is still strong and independent.

Maimane says if South Africans want the outcome of the poll to represent the true will of the people, they must ensure that the ANC does not use state resources like food parcels to gain an electoral advantage.
