Desire for power could destroy the party: ANC

The African National Congress (ANC) has warned its members against fighting for positions, adding that an insatiable desire for power could destroy the party.

This emerged at a media conference addressed by ANC spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa, in Port Elizabeth.

There have been numerous disputes related to councillor candidate lists across the country.

Kodwa says mayoral candidates will be named before the elections. “We are still committed to announce our mayoral candidates ahead of the elections including strategic municipalities, whether it is a district or not.”

Kodwa says, “We’ll still do that in the next two weeks. Our structures, PEC (Provincial Executive Committee) and RTT (Regional Task Team) in this case, must also participate and select three names which must then be processed, because we want those mayoral candidates to be part of the campaign in the areas where they come from.”

Reacting on the latest report of the Auditor General, regarding Nelson Mandela Bay Metro as one of the metros with the most wasteful, fruitless and irregular expenditure to an amount of R 1.7 billion, Kodwa says they are dealing with shortcomings.

“Under the leadership of Danny Jordaan, we are beginning to take decisions about issues of transgression. We must remember this is way before his time. Now that we are beginning to pick up, it is an issue that we cannot tolerate and we must build in improvements.”
