The Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) Julius Malema has put speculation of his mayoral candidacy to bed. Speaking at the party’s list conference, Malema says he is not available for any local government position.
The EFF is promising to field a reputable, diverse group of councilor candidates with a 50/50 representation of women for the August 03 elections.
The local government elections will be a real test for the EFF as it contests for the first time. The party is holding its national list conference in Midrand to scrutinize the candidates nominated by the party’s more than 3900 branches.
June 03 is the Independent Electoral Committee’s (IEC) deadline for parties to submit their lists. EFF leader Julius Malema says they have strict criteria for councillor candidates.
“You must be a member of the EFF in good standing; you must be a discipline member of the community, a well-respected individual in the community and a community activist. You must be willing to work 24 hours (a day) and our branch guidelines indicate choosing people who have appeal in a community- not just an opportunist who managed to manipulate the system and got themselves nominated.”
Malema says he will not be available for any local government position. The party is fielding candidates in all wards throughout the country and says their candidates will reflect the country’s demographics.
“There are no white candidates and if there are I am sure it is just one or two. There are not many white people but more than 50% are females.”
