ANC KZN urges candidates not nominated to accept branch decisions

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has urged candidates who were not nominated by the party for elections to accept the decision of the branches.

Newly-appointed Premier Willies Mchunu made the comment at a rally in Durban following several protests over nominated councillors.

The new premier received a warm welcome from ANC members, at his first public appearance since being sworn in as premier of the province.

He lashed out at those in the party who speak to the media about the party’s internal processes.

Mchunu lambasted councillors who he says do not respect the outcome of branch elections.

He says KwaZulu-Natal had sent its final councillor list to national.

“Going to newspapers to criticize each other is not an ANC process, going on TV to criticize each other is not an ANC process. People must go to their structures and voice their concerns.”

However, he says the ANC would listen to disgruntled members but urged them to stand united.

There’s growing speculation about who would occupy the powerful eThekwini mayoral position after the elections.

James Nxumalo, who holds the position currently, looks set to get the boot.

However the region’s chair remained mum on the issue.

“It is the wish from the people of eThekwini , it is the wish from structures of eThekwini, but for now it’s too early to talk about it,” says ANC regional chairperson Zandile Gumede.

All eyes in the province will be on the ANC’s final list of mayoral candidates.
