The National Assembly has passed the Expropriation Bill with objections from four opposition parties. More than 200 Members of Parliament voted in favour of the Bill.
The African National Congress (ANC), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and National Freedom Party (NFP) supported the Bill while the Democratic Alliance (DA), Freedom Front Plus (FFP), United Democratic Movement (UDM) and African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) do not support it.
Reading the results after voting was conducted from the allocated seats of Members of Parliament, House chairperson Cedrick Frolick announced that there were seven “no” votes, no abstentions and 208 votes in favour of the Bill.
The Bill will now be sent to President Jacob Zuma for assent. Once it has been signed into law, it will repeal the 1975 Expropriation Bill to bring it in line with the Constitution.
