The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chairperson Glen Mashinini has appealed to political party leaders to encourage tolerance and peace during campaigning for the upcoming local government elections.
Mashinini was speaking during the signing of the electoral code of conduct by political parties in Midrand north of Johannesburg. He says it is crucial that a conducive environment for elections be created by all role players.
Different political parties addressed and promised to uphold the electoral code of conduct. Mashinini says they will be a second signing ceremony where independent parties and candidates will be invited.
He says as the IEC they will ensure that the elections are free and fair and will deal decisively with anyone who tries to affect the smooth running of the elections.
He also urged the voters to behave well during the elections.
The 2016 Municipal Elections are set to take place on August 3.
