The African National Congress (ANC) spokesperson Zizi Kodwa has retracted a statement he made that people in Vuwani, outside Thohoyandou, can burn everything in the village but nothing will change.
The statement caused an outcry on social media with people saying the ANC is a party that does not listen to people.
Residents in Vuwani have been protesting against their inclusion into a municipality to be established in Vhembe district.
Kodwa says, “I think the statement has been received with bad taste and it was quiet regrettable in a manner in which it is understood, the manner in which it was put. And I think whatever interpretations that are there, that statement was never meant to undermine the grievances of the people. And really on behalf of the ANC if the statement has been construed and has been interpreted to suggest that we don’t care, we don’t listen to people, that I’m sorry about. But to suggest that we are an organisation that does not listen to people, people can burn anything, that part of the statement we regret.”
