South African Communist Party (SACP) general secretary Blade Nzimande has called on the working class to vote for the African National Congress (ANC) on August 3, 2016.
Nzimande was giving his message of support at the SACP’s May Day celebration at the Moretele Park in Mamelodi, Pretoria on Sunday.
The SACP is celebrating with Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and other alliance partners including South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) and the ANC.
Nzimande says the ruling party has achieved much in the past 22 years.
“We should not underestimate what we have collectively achieved over this short period. A constitutional democracy, workers’ rights, mass roll out of subsidised housing and water connections. We are also at the same calling on the working class to come out in their numbers on August 3rd and vote for the African National Congress,” adds the SACP general secretary.
Earlier, the SACP used the occasion to vow to be Cosatu’s dependable ally.
The celebration comes at a time when expelled Cosatu leader Zwelinzima Vavi has convened a Workers Party with the view of
forming a federation that will rival Cosatu.
SACP spokesperson Alex Mashilo – addressing the crowd earlier – said they want to see workers united under one federation.
