Residents of Zandspruit, northwest of Johannesburg, have told DA leader Mmusi Maimane that they hope his visit to their area will change their circumstances.
They told him of their huge hardships related to a lack of delivery of basic services such as water and sanitation to their area.
Maimane is visiting Zandspruit to engage with residents and outline his party’s plan for the upcoming local government elections.
Maimane told residents of Zandspruit that they can’t fully celebrate Freedom Day, as they are not yet free.
He says people are still suffering because they don’t have basic services.
The DA leader has also accused the Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau of ignoring the people of Zandspruit.
He says young people in the area do not have a future because of limited access to resources.
Maimane says ten years ago he walked the streets of Zandspruit, and little has changed over the years.
He has also collected a petition from community leaders to table in Parliament.
