The United Front says it will not be contesting August 3 local government elections and will not forming any electoral pact with the Democratic Alliance (DA).
The movement was reacting to reports that ousted Congress of South African Trade Unions general-secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi held talks with DA leader Mmusi Maimane to possibly form a coalition in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro after the poll.
According to the reports the DA is prepared to offer Vavi the post of deputy mayor to end the ANC’s rule in Port Elizabeth.
Vavi has refused to comment on the allegations and directed enquiries to the UF. The movement says Vavi was not meeting the DA on behalf of the UF. The DA has also dismissed reports that it is coalition talks with UF or Vavi..
According to an Ipsos poll about 43% of the electorate in the metro will vote for the African National Congress against 37% for the DA.
