More households are connected to electricity: Zuma

African National Congress (ANC) President Jacob Zuma says more households are connected to electricity and have access to pipe water and sanitation facilities.

President Zuma is launching the ruling party’s local government election manifesto at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth.

The Metro is expected to be heavily contested with the opposition Democratic Alliance eyeing to unseat the ANC.

Hundreds of the ANC’s rank and file have filled the stadium.

Zuma says the percentage of households that are connected to electricity has increased by 70% in 2001 to 86% in 2014, this amounts to more than five million households.

We have come a long way in improving local government

“Two million poor households we exempted from paying electricity.”

Zuma says between 2001 and 2014 the percentage of households receiving water has increased by 61% in 2001 to 90% in 2014, this moved from 70 million to 11 million in 2014.

The president says the ANC has made it their duty since 1994 to make sure they deliver quality services. “We have come a long way in improving local government.”

Zuma has called on communities to hold councillors that are not performing well accountable.
