Makwetu hailed as a political giant

African People’s Convention President (APC), Themba Godi, has praised late former Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) leader Clarence Makwetu as political giant who loved his country.

Godi has been speaking at Gwatyu farm where the funeral is held.

Makwetu, who has been granted a special provincial official funeral, grew up at Hoyita village before venturing into farming at Gwatyu.

He died in a private hospital in Queenstown after a long illness on April 1.

Godi says Makwetu says was an outstanding leader. “There is a lot that we have learnt from the leaders like him, I am what I am today because of the wisdom we got from him. At the same time, we are reminded of where we come from, we are reminded of their generation that sacrificed everything in the public good not in their personal interest.”

He followed his name Mlamli which means peace maker

Former PAC MP, Lehlape Mhahlele, says Makwetu always preached peace and unity.

“He was preaching peace that peace must unify. He always encouraged us to move away from corrupt tendencies , he did preach peace and prosperity and the return of the land its rightful owners.”

Meanwhile, residents of Hoyita village have lauded the family of the late struggle giant for laying him to rest at his home village.
His close friend, Simpompo Msongo says Makwetu’s struggle credential have the village on the global map.

“Makwetu was a wiseman , he was very active, he followed his name Mlamli which means peace maker, he did everything here and he tried his best .He taught us a lot about Poqo and he enlightened us here.”
