African National Congress (ANC) head of campaigns, Nomvula Mokonyane, says that the party believes it will get much support from the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and Buffalo City during the local government elections.
She was speaking as ANC supporters in their thousands descend on the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela Stadium for the launch of the party’s local government elections manifesto.
President Jacob Zuma is due to give the key address at the event on Saturday.

Mokonyane says, “We have turned the tide. We have activated the support base of the ANC, but we don’t take any vote for granted and hence us being here in Nelson Mandela, because this is also a demonstration of our determination to consolidate our support and to break into new territories so that we are able to have absolute influence into the communities here.”

ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe has urged people to join the party during the launch of the manifesto.
“We are hoping that the stadium will be full and go to overflow areas, but the primary thing is to fill the stadium. That is the characteristic of the ANC, it is known for filling stadiums when it has events. People must come and get our manifesto, listen to it, take it back home and begin to spread among the people of SA.”
Mantashe has conveyed his condolences to the family of the ANC member who died on Friday night during a head-on collision between a taxi and a bakkie.
Sixteen others were injured in the collision between Queenstown and Cofimvaba.
“We send our condolences to the families. I know the road R61 between Queenstown and Cofimvaba is quite a narrow road and dangerous. It confirms that we need to broaden our roads and make them bigger. That accident is quite painful and those people were coming to the manifesto launch. We have a fatality, we have many who are injured. We hope those who are in hospital a speedy recovery.”
