There will be no snap elections: Mantashe

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Gwede Mantashe says there will be no snap elections (elections called for earlier than expected).

He said this while answering questions from journalists following Friday’s night’s address by President Jacob Zuma.

There have been calls for early elections and the dissolution of Parliament.

Mantashe says the party has accepted the President’s apology to the nation and that calls for his recall would amount to tearing the party apart.

He also rejected moves by the opposition to try to impeach the President. Mantashe clarified the position regarding elections.

“There will be no slap elections alongside Local Government Elections. We are going into Local Government Elections.”
