Jackson Mthembu appointed ANC Chief Whip

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe has confirmed that former party spokesperson Jackson Mthembu has been appointed the party’s Chief Whip.

Speaking on Forum@8, Mantashe says the decision was taken at this weekend’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

Mthembu will take over from Doris Dlakude who has been acting in the position since the resignation of Stone Sizane earlier this month. Sizane quit as chief whip three weeks ago to take up a position as Ambassador to Germany.

The ANC announced at the beginning of March that Sizani was being redeployed. He had been the ANC’s Chief Whip since 2013, replacing Mathole Motshekga.

Last week, Mthembu expressed outrage at the Gupta family after Deputy Minister of Finance Mcebisi Jonas’s explosive announcement that he was offered the minister post before Nhlanhla Nene was removed.

Mthembu said he believed the ANC should “deal with this arrogance of the Guptas once and for all”.-Additional reporting by News 24
