ANC NEC enters final day

The African National Congress’ (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting enters its final day on Sunday behind closed doors at Irene outside Pretoria.

The ruling party said before the NEC meeting that the country’s ailing economy would be at the top of the agenda.

There were widespread predictions before the meeting that it would deal with the Gupta family’s alleged influence on government, dubbed ‘state capture’.

However, ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe said before the meeting that the Gupta issue would not officially be on the agenda.

Some former members of the ANC Youth League picketed outside the venue on Saturday, calling for the party to recall President Jacob Zuma.

Mantashe has dismissed the picketing as a non-event.
