Maimane calls for non-violence during voter registration

Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane has encouraged South Africans to refrain from violent protesting on the second day in the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) voter registration process for the upcoming Local Government Elections.

On Saturday, there were reported isolated incidents of violence in most provinces at registration centres.

“Rather than us burning tyres let’s take the time now to register to vote. Rather than burning universities lets get into a room, negotiate, get elected, remove governments that are illegitimate.”

Meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) say the party is ready to restore hope in the country, and has urged South Africans to register to vote.

“We are targeting all demographics of society and all the structures of community we will be speaking to the poor and the rich,” says EFF secretary general, Godrich Gardee

The IEC also says individuals who are attempting to prevent voter registration from proceeding smoothly, are undermining the fabric of democracy.
