The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape is taking part in a registration drive at the Cape Town station to raise awareness about the importance to register to vote in the upcoming Local Government Elections.
The party’s leader Mmusi Maimane and Cape Town Mayor Patrica De Lille are interacting with residents.
This weekend is the first that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has organised for voters to register and also check their addresses on the voters’ roll. The Western Cape currently has 2.9 million registered voters.
Dressed in their blue party t shirts, DA members are handing out pamphlets encouraging people to register to vote while singing “We are ready for 2016”. Most people passing by are using the opportunity to take a selfie with Maimane and De Lille.
Maimane has encouraged the youth to register to vote this weekend. A date for the Local Government Elections (LGE 2016) has not yet been set but by law has to take place before August 16.
