Candidate nominations for the 2016 Local Government Elections must be credible and from within the communities. That’s the message from the South African National Civic Organization (Sanco).
At a provincial meeting in Welkom, Sanco called on its members to vote African National Congress (ANC) in upcoming local elections.
With elections around the corner, Sanco is gearing up for the role it was actually created to play, which is representing communities in their quest for service delivery and access to government departments.
Sanco leaders say there is no contradiction in the fact that they back the ruling party 100%.
Mathabo Leeto, deputy president of Sanco says, “We are going to say to our communities that that despite the challenges that are still there the ANC is the only party that can be able to change their lives for the better.”
Lucky Phooko, Sanco Free State chairperson says, “Every conference we have had since 1992 still gives us the mandate that Sanco is a strategic partner of the alliance led by the ANC.”
In recent elections candidate nominations have been problematic, sometimes leading to violent clashes.
However, Sanco says not this time around.
“Our role is to lead our communities into making this process smooth and only credible and acceptable candidates are nominated and after all the processes become public representatives and councillors,” says Phooko.
The civic body also called on service delivery protesters to keep demonstrations peaceful and not allow the destruction of property.
