A Democratic Alliance (DA) disciplinary hearing has recommended that the party’s councillor in the Nelson Mandela Metro, Nico du Plessis, be stripped off all his elected positions in the DA after he pleaded guilty on charges of misconduct.
The charges relate to the improper sourcing of funds for ward projects from the Councillor’s Discretion Fund and failure to follow proper procedures. The panel has also recommended Du Plessis’ membership of the party be terminated but that sentence has been suspended for 18 months.
According to DA spokesperson, Kevin Mileham, the sanction recommended by the panel has to be considered by the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) for a final decision.
“The sentence that was recommended by the disciplinary hearing was that his membership be terminated, but this sentence was suspended for the period of 18 months, provided that he does not get found guilty of any further misconduct. The second part of his sentence was that he is stripped of all offices within the DA. He remains a councillor until the elections.”
