Both the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and Congress of the People (COPE) in the North West have pledged support to the Tlokwe independent candidates in the upcoming by-elections to be held in the Potchefstroom based Tlokwe Local Municipality.
The parties are not participating in the elections but want to ensure the victory of independent candidates in some of the contested wards. The by-elections in Tlokwe will be held in seven wards in the next two weeks.
EFF Provincial Secretary Thabo Sehloho has confirmed the party position in supporting independent candidates.
“Remember some of the people who are independent candidates are members of the EFF and we are hundred percent fully behind them, we are going to support them. We are going to inject some of our resources to make sure that they emerge victorious.”
COPE’s Kenneth Maduna says the party will help the independent candidates with their campaigns.
“ We realised in 2013 that contesting elections with many opposition parties, we split votes unnecessarily so we said lets rather support them in terms of canvassing, campaigning, the other reason was to ask our supporters and members to rally behind the independent candidates for them to ensure they get enough votes to win the wards.”
ANC Provincial Secretary Dakota Legoete says his party is not worried about the pact entered into by the EFF, COPE and independent candidates.
“As the African National Congress we are going to reclaim our majority and run Tlokwe Local Municipality once more. We are not going to be discouraged, we are definite and clear that we are going to reclaim Tlokwe municipality and we are confident about the future of the people of Tlokwe, they know the good things that the ANC has done for them.”
